On the budget

Here are a few articles on the deficit reduction panel's preliminary report on how to reduce the federal budget deficit. Take a look at it... think about it critically... look at some of the data out there on the national debt, and see if these guys are actually going to solve this problem with the plan they propose. What things will get cut... what happens if we dont make cuts? Is this enough? The last link will show you some facts to compare everything with.

  1. First off, I know pretty close to nothing about the national debt, so what I say may not make a whole lot of sense.

That being said, I am glad that people are actually trying to make a difference and fix the whole debt problem. I think it's a really bad situation that the US has gotten itself into, and it's good that we are trying to get out of it.
From what I've read, it seems like the general view on the proposal is that it is pretty radical. Some people support it while others don't. A lot of cuts are being suggested such as freezing the pay of noncombatant military, reducing overseas bases, and freezing federal pay. To me, the numbers given for amounts of money seem really big and significant, but then I know that it will still take time to completely become out of debt even if those cuts are made. I don't know if they are enough or not.

Like I said before though, I'm just glad people are trying to make a change. I think this will really help people start thinking more seriously about fixing the problem. Obviously changes can be made to the proposal to make it better if needed.

  2. Ok i get that people are trying to make a change and everything and get out of the debt. However i think that the government is stupid because we spend money that we do not even have. We do not even pay most of the interest. I just think that it is stupid and we need to take responsibility. I personally think that we should take away food stamps and other things like that. We support people that just sit on their but and not even try to get a job. When we pay for people to live without a job, that gives them no motivation to get one. I think that the government spends money on things they do not need to.

  3. I agree with Jess about the food stamp thing. I know a lot of people who live happily with them and have no desire to get a job. Also, I highly disagree with retirement getting later and later. There is no reason that everyone has to spend their entire life working and not even get a break before they're dead.

  4. it is good that the people in charge are at least trying to deal with really the biggest problem that faces our nation. however i do not think the plans will follow through as planed. for one the generation coming up next does not want to have to retire any later than we have to. Also wouldnt all these freezes on federal pay and what not just make the government owe more money to some branch?

  5. Our government is not a government anymore. If the programs are too many for a fifth grader to remember, then the simplicity of government is not for the benefit of man, but for itself, because "simple" has gone too far. What do I believe?

    ...

Social Security: Social Security is a pick-me-up for people who don't want to save money now for later. It's a program that makes the government invest into every person of the United States and of those who don't even live here. I think that we should keep social security till the old people who can't move a muscle healthfully until they die. The people now who are abled bodies should save money now for later.

Healthcare: Healthcare should never exist by the government. It should be invested by the companies that the people work for. The government doesn't need to punish people by taxes just so people can continue smoking and getting drunk.

Taxes: Taxes should be the same for all people. There is no equality if the rich are taxed more than the poor. They made the money, so they should keep it and use their instruments to play their music.

Agencies: Government as a whole should never promote an agency that helps the planet, people, or animals. That should be the duty of the state, if not the town. Not every state has environmental flaws, so why should everyone. With that so, then why does the whole government need to be involved. It should be the state's problem.

    ...

The government should ONLY be what makes the general laws of the country. It should ONLY regulate such laws and in addition: taxes and foreign affairs. It doesn't need to be part of a "teddy bear" agency to protect Winnie the Pooh from being lost in the TV realm. Let the state of Kansas figure that out for itself for all I care. I don't want to pay for it, and we sure don't need to go into more debt for a rag filled with fluff. [Pooh's not a rag. I'm just making an example.]

  6. I think it is good people want to fix the problem and not just keep getting further and further in debt. But im sure this is the first time people have had plans to fix it and it has succeeded and it prolly won't now. they just keep spending more money and lending more money even if they try to change it.

  7. I think we got in this situation because we spent money we DO NOT HAVE. Hmmmmm.....maybe if we cut back, we can get out of this problem! We should cut out any unnecessary spending and create a better budget.

  8. As everyone has been saying I am in agreement with that it is really good that we are trying to get out of debt. But it is the governments fault that the debt keeps increasing as it has been because they are spending money they dont have which effects the economy an deverything really.

  9. I agree with everyone. It is very smart to atleast try to get out of debt always. I agree with Paul mostly, we need to spend the money we do have wisely, and create a better budget on spending it.
