Pericles Funeral Oration
Check out one of the most famous speeches ever made.  Let me know what you think.

  1. I think he talks a lot more about Athens than he does the people that died. I like how he describes Athens as an equal place. So it doesn't matter if you're poor and whatever else, as long as you are able to vote you still matter. I like when he says, "Its administration favours the many instead of the few; this is why it is called a democracy." That makes a democracy seem so much better. Whenever he starts talking about the soldiers who have died, it all starts to make a little more sense. He seemed to be proud of how they stood up and fought. He talks a lot about how they were brave because they wanted to be free and he tries to tell the others that they should be the same. I like the message he is trying to get across with this speech.

  3. the very first part about the people gather under the tent and the citizens came by to send their condolences, i felt that was very sentimental of them, and very respectful.

  4. First off: The way they honor "the fallen" is very different from how we honor them or view anyone's funeral. But, that's what made Athens unique!
I liked this speech not only because it showed the respectfullness to those who fought, but that it also reminded all of the citizens where they live/what they stand for. It showed their Athenian pride and their passion to fight for their country.

  5. This speech was very touching and respectful. It's great that he recognizes everyone who fought and stoop up for them. Not a lot of people commemorate things people do.
    ~Many Props!~

  6. i think he was a master manipulator. To hear the how he continually rambled about the state to make himself sound intelligent before those who are simple and believe everything they hear. he easily convinced them though a front. like they said in the movie gladiator, if you control the mob, you control Rome, or in this case, Greece.

  7. i think that he was a good speaker, and made the people believe him by that. he kept talking about how they would be remembered in history by the great things they had done and built.

  8. To me it seems like he's bragging about how athens will move on and how they're big enough to handle this. It seems like he's being a little arrogant. But the way he honored the fallen was nice... respect.
