Watch the following video, and answer the following questions:
1. Should the KKK be allowed to hold a protest on public property? Is this form of speech protected by the first amendment?
2. For what reason was there such a strong police presence? Was it necessary?
3. Based on what the officers said, particularly the one that was injured, what do you think happened at the last KKK rally in memphis in 1998?
4. Do you think that this situation was handled correctly?

  1. 1. I wouldn't see why they shouldn't be allowed to host a protest. It's not like it got violent and people were injured. There are tons of protests from LGBT groups to WWF protests. Shouldn't KKK be allowed? I don't agree with their views, but I think they are covered under the first amendment.

    2. The police were there just in case the rally got physical and too big to handle, but from what I watched, it didn't get to that point.

    3. I think the 1998 rally got very violent and caused a major uproar.

    4. I think all of the necessary precautions were used and the rally/protest was viewed as okay.

  2. 1. The KKK was allowed to do thei little rally cause its free speech if thats how they feel then they can expres it like the protestors did. Tis situation falls under the man who burned the American flag in fron of the gov. building in Texas.

    2. The was strong police force incase it got out of hand like it diid in 1998.

    3. In the 1998 rally there was violence and property damaged. A police officer also got injured in the process of trying to stop the riot.

    4. I think the situatiion was handled very well, none got out of hand, and no property or physical damage was done. It seemed that everyone stayed pretty calm.

  3. I think that they should be allowed to protest. Just because we don't like what they are protesting it doesn't mean that we can stop them. I don't think that this could be considered a clear and present danger, but if it could then we could stop them.

The police were there just in case it got out of hand like it did in the past.

Previously it got really out of hand and people got injured and stuff got ruined. The police got hurt during it too.

This one went well. No one really got injured and everything was handled well. There wasn't any damage to anything this time.

  4. 1. Even though I disagree with racism, I think that the KKK should be able to express what they feel, but there are limits on how far they should be able to take it. Burning a cross in somebody's front yard is completely redundant.

    2. Throughout history, there have been several times when the people have protested, and there have also been several times when the police have been there to stop it.

    3. The riot was unnessecary.

    4. The situation was handled correctly, but there could've been potential for something to get slightly out of control.

  5. 1. When my parents were dating, they witnessed the KKK meeting outside of a church. It creeped them out. But it is in the first amendment that we have the right to do this. I am not one for the KKK, obviously, and I don't think that it is okay for them to worship on public property. They want to get a rise out of someone and thats not okay.

    2. Yes, it was the best thing for the police to be there. You don't know how one of these rallys will go, or end up.

    3. There was probably some violence involved & the police now just wanted to keep it monitored so that one happen again.

    4. Absolutely yes. Better safe thatn sorry . . . especially when it comes to people like this.

  6. 1. The KKK are still citizens with rights and are protected by the first amendment.

    2. There was a strong police presence because the 1989 rally got out of hand and a police officer ended up injured. It was necessary because you never know when someone could get injured.

    3. In the 1989 rally it got violent and property and people got injured.

    4. Yes I think this situation was handled correctly. No one got hurt and no property was damaged.

  7. I think that the KKK should definitely be allowed to protest publicly because they have the same rights as every other citizen. Even though what they wear/say/represent may be offensive to some people, keep in mind that most protest and rallies are like that too for example immigration or gay rights protests.

Maybe there was a strong police force because they were taking precautions. Maybe they were making sure that no one in the klan brought bombs or arms because the KKK is unpredictable.

I think the KKK caused something like a mosh pit and hurt a lot of people.

Yes, I think the situation was handled properly. The cops didn't use excessive force and no one got hurt.

  8. I think the KKK had every right to protest after all this a free country.
The police was there to keep everything under control just incase anything went wrong. I do think it was necessary cause when things like protesting happen theres always conflict working its way. The last rally in 1998 got out of control there was a lot of damage and injuries. I think the situation was handled just right. There was not any major conflicts or damage.
