Indians and Puritans

Based on the video we watched in class, take one of the three positions provided in the link below. Then:

A). Take a position, and write a short explanation of why the Narraganset indians should chose the option that you have suggested.

B). Disagree with the decision of at least one of your classmates by responding to their post on the blog.

C). Over the weekend, write a short speech (150-200 words) in attempt to convince your fellow tribesmen/women to follow you.  This is due on Monday.

write a short speech or a persuasive essay as if you were a Indian Sachem during King Phillip’s War.  Try to convince your fellow villagers to take your position.  What is the best option for your people?

  1. If I was Narragansett I would have definitely gone with option #1: "Fight the Colonists and remove them from the land".
After that winter they were weak and had few resources. Taking them out would have been more than easy for the Natives. I understand why the chief chose not to in real life, because he took the risk of being peaceful. But if that was me I would have done what I thought was best for my people, protecting them.

    1. B. Sergio, I would have to disagree with you. The English people were also weak and they needed the Indians. The Indians could have worked out an agreement to where they could have kept everything and the English could have gotten what they wanted. The Indians would have quickly been outnumbered by the growing population of English people. By being peaceful with the English, the Indians could have gained many new resources that helped them all.

  2. My option would for sure be option 3. There is nothing good going on with the indians still staying there! Their leader died 30 years ago, and they have no power. The English people are starting to take over real fast. The indians best bet is to go to Vermont to create a new peaceful home. The Western Abenkai has given them the option to live peaceful lives, why not take it?

At Sergio, I can see where you are coming from, however, what if the fighting was to go wrong? Leaving the indians even weaker than before. The colonists seemed to be strong and willing people, ready for a fight. Maybe protecting the people could be handle in a better way (cough moving to vermont cough) (:

    1. Mackenzie, I respect your opinion, but because someone dies, knowledge, power, strength, and leadership dies with them? In modern day America, presidents leave office, but the next leader decides how powerful America is going to be. Just because they might not be AS POWERFUL, doesn't mean they don't have some power. Also, why should they have to relocate to Vermont? What if the French turned on the Narragansett just like the English turned on King Philip? Just because the English weren't located in Vermont just yet, that didn't mean that they weren't eventually going to move there. If the English had moved to Vermont then another war could have broken out. Taking care of the problem (option #1) before it becomes a problem is more of my style.

  3. I would have gone with option #1. Look, the enemy that you have been fighting for YEARS with would like to stop and band together. Doesn't that alone make you want to join? The English have been growing like weeds and they are bound to try to come and take the Narragansett land! The Indians had the knowledge and resources to drive the English away, they could have easily set the English in line. Who were the English to come and try to conquer land that had already been conquered?

  4. For B I'm gonna' have to disagree with Mackie since only her and Tyler have commented and Tyler has chosen the same option as me haha.
Well I see why Mackie would chose #3. It would also be reasonable to stay out of the fight and not get any one hurt. But then again why run when it's YOUR land in which you were there first? Where's your pride. Also, why run when you out number the Europeans and can take them easily at the moment?

  5. For (A), I choose Option 1.
The English is growing every day. I’d jump at the chance to save my land, culture, tradition, and even family, especially If me greatest enemy is willing to drop what they are doing to help rid of the very people who are trying to take the very land we already have control of. But when and or IF they were to defeat the English, there’s also a chance of the Wampanoag to turn around and do the exact same thing the English were attempting to a greater or lesser degree. (Idk just a thought) Even with that scare, I’d still jump at the chance of anyone trying to harm what I've worked so hard to get.
For (B), I disagree with Mackenzie.
I See where you are coming from. Everyone wants to keep their family safe and sound. Keeping peace and staying out of a fight is everyone’s main goal, which is until someone threatens the safety of what is yours. Running is not a form of peace; it is a form of “cowardness” in my book. I’m not saying that fighting is always the right answer, but running away from a problem isn't either. Even if you lost the most powerful leader you've ever had, that does not mean all power was lost. As Tyler says, just because they aren't as powerful as the previous, doesn't mean they won’t have any power to offer themselves. Who says the English wont move to Vermont, and continue what they tried before, again?

  6. I believe fighting is the correct option. They worked entirely to hard on everything they had just to have people come and claim it as there . Sure rere is a possibility of loosing the fight, but hey needed to have a no sacrifice no gain mentality if they truly wanted to keep there land. It's not even that they are just fighting for land , they are fighting for right , culture , family , hard world ,etc. Its not right that the English came onto their land and claimed what was clearly theirs to begin with. Like Tyler said even their enemies wanted to team up . There was clearly no talking through it , the only other option I to fight for what they worked for!

  7. I'm sorry but I also have to disagree with Mac.One fight could have changed the entire course of history. Sure they might have wanted to keep the peace , but it didn't end that way for them. I don't believe in violence, but I do believe in standing up for yourself and not letting people walk I'ver you . This is exactly what they do in the long run.

  8. A:
The Narraganset natives should have killed off the settlers. They should have learned that the "white man" is the same no matter what. The natives had experienced horrible things from the Europeans. History cannot be changed though.

  9. A. Honestly, I believe that the smartest option is #2. All of you have said that the English population is only growing and if you don't fight them they will take over. That isn't logical if they are growing. They are eventually going to grow and take over the Indians by just their size. If they were to join them they would at least get the chance save their families, have new trading options, and have many other opportunities that the English is bringing over. For it to work out they would have to make sure that the English are going to keep their word and let the Indians keep what they have. They both could have used the help. They were all sick and they needed each other.

  10. A. I choose option two. Both the Native Americans and the English settlers were in need. The Indians needed help (they were losing much of their tribe)and the English needed diretion, people, and resources. And Native Americans had a belief that if there were women or children involved, it was a sign that they weren't looking for a fight. The English had both. So I think I'd help the English settlers out. There is much that could benefit both of them, like barter for things only the other group had, provide reinforcements for skirmish, and learn more about the other's culture.

@Tyler I see where you stand, but making war with people who wanted to start over doesn't make sense to me. It seems rather redundant, considering that the English brought over women and children, which to the Natives was a sign that they were not looking for a quarrel. The natives sent scouts out to watch them for a while, and as time went on, they became weaker. And if word got back to England that the Natives attacked and killed innocent settlers, that could evolve into a more drastic situation/war/battle.

  12. A. Option 2 because they can live peacefully at home, then bust some heads when its time to fight. Mostly because England would fight their own tactics and fighting styles plus the native americans fighting style so it would throw them off completly. B. Like evrybody else i would disagree with Mackie.I think they should stay and fight for what is rightfully theirs. Even if it means killing the very last Native.

  13. I agree with kassidy i would join the britihs to save myself and my family. Once the British arrived the Indians should have known they were going to take over at some point if they ontinued to grow. Not everyone wuld have survived but atleast some Indians would still be around an had an influence. I have to disagree with any one who said fight against the British because they have more resources and better weapons to fight with.

  14. Although any of these options will inevitably lead to the destruction of many native american villages, I think the best option to go with would be option #2.To band together and try to fight off the english seems like the smartest thing to do. It's best to fight for and protect your people and everything that you have worked for and established. For the time being, it's best to defend yourself from the english and show them what you're about. You can't stand back and watch your people get wiped out. Going to war is the best bet, because you'll be able to say that you fought for what matters to you most.

  15. A:I would go with option #2 because they are not just giving up, there actually fighting for what is left, that would be the best option because even there old enemies went on the English side, that would mean more help towards them. It is also a good option because that would mean that they would end with the Narragansett. I disagree with Mackie, because that means giving up, and they should not give up they should stay and fight for what is truly there's.

  16. I choose option #2. It would have been best for the Indians to go to war with the english to defend their people and the land that belonged to them. Everyone is going to die, might as well be something worth dying for.
